Auger is a tool to dig holes in the ground. It is more
efficient way to drill holes than through gimlet. Fence posts are drilled
through post auger.
It is also used to take samples through the core ice, soil
and tested in lab for the properties of soil. Auger has threaded shank and top has
cross handle and can be used on wood as well. It appears like a corkscrew. A
drill bit is attached at one end, which rotates pierces and moves forward in
the digging of the hole.
The method of drilling is called helical shaft for
boring. Snow blower work is done through it. Loose material can be moved
through it as newly snow fall; Earth auger work on the soil. Carpenter
uses this tool as well. The work is done
very finely with this instrument.
Precision is the word for it; the auger bit
comes in different sizes. Augar bits that are expansive come with adjustable
blades along with cutting edges as well as with spurs. Huge holes can be made
with it. Big dimensions soil holes required for fence posts coal mining,
telephone lines, ice and ice fish catching are made by bigger augers. Horizontal augers of 8 feet dimensions are
drilled for coal mining.
Auger is made up of six parts namely screw, spurs, cutting edges,
twist, shank and tang. The screw is tapering is puny in length and diameter.
It
assists the bit and directs it for the work. At the other end the twin pointed
points known as spurs make a round of the hole. Radial cutting edges cut within
the hole. The twist in the tool shuns the cutter. Augur goes round and round penetrating
deeper into the soil guided by the spiral.
Auger digs post holes and is also known as earth auger or hand-held
power earth drill; others call it mechanized post-hole digger or soil auger.
The tool can be physically operated or made to work through electricity, and
gas. It can work through the internal combustion engine of a vehicle like
tractor. Physically operated auger is used in the home garden. Drilling is done
through this tool on trees like maple to draw syrup.
